Jody Swartz and Cheryl Painter compete
in their first recognized show of 2006.

Story by Cheryl Painter

Saturday morning's temps were in the low 60s and there was a steady rain. Not optimal but rideable even schooling at home, but as the day continued the winds picked up and the temps dropped.

A couple of hours before our ride times you could see your breath, the wind picked up even more and the rain was sideways. We had gone numerous times to Jody's truck and turned on the heat at full blast to warm up.

Jody had asked me several times, "Are you sure you don't want to go to the hotel and forget about this?"

No we are going to do this! I've been showing a lot longer than Jody and have ridden Tjerk in the rain, so I knew what to expect. Jody unfortunately had not and I suspected he was a bit apprehensive.

"I haven't ridden Apollo in the rain and I don't know what he'll do with all those water puddles."

I looked at Jody and calmly stated, "You're about to find out. This will be a good learning experience."

And, in spite of the all the puddles, Apollo and Jody came in 5th in the Training Level Test 3 with a score of 61%! I was very proud of both Jody and Apollo and after his ride Jody told me he was glad he rode, and I was too. It's always rewarding to overcome obstacles and find out they are not as difficult as you thought!

I was pleased with Tjerk, too. We came in with first place!

Sunday the weather was great but by the time we were to ride the rings were mud soup.

I got my first qualifying score for GAIGs at Training Level 4 and the photos are from my Training Level 3 Test in which I placed second with a 68.333%.

My goals this year are to be 1st in the FHANA All Breeds, get 70 percentiles on my tests and to qualify and ribbon at the GAIGs and BLMs.

As of today I've received one of my two qualifying scores for the GAIGs and I've qualified for the BLMs.
