Willow Tree, Michigan
One Saturday in June, I spent the day at a dressage schooling show in Michigan with several of my students. I went with them to coach and watch their rides, as I'm always curious to see how my students bring their training into an actual dressage test. The show facility was at a private boarding barn, a beautiful farm with a small lake and large shady willow trees near the arenas. The arena footing was Michigan's natural sandy soil, harrowed and dragged to perfection.

I was delighted with the overall performance of my group. Every one was impeccably turned out and everyone place in a class. I want to give a special 'Thank You' to Patie Varner who photographed all my students and provided the photos for this page.

Natalie Perry

Jamie Hall Jamie Hall, riding Liz Granger's mare Rose was right on Natalie's heels with Reserve High Point at Into level. Jamie is 9 years old and petite, Rose is a substantial Irish Sport horse. Jamie had to work a little harder to influence Rose through the tests and as Jamie says, Natalie is the one to beat.

Debra Patzer Debra Patzer and Quaker, her Canadian sport horse also did very well at Into level. This was their first horse show together, and a test for Quaker's gentle character. Quaker is very large, standing 17.3. Debra also showed two other walk/trot tests called the Glass- ed, these test were more difficult than Intro level with many 10-meter turns and bends.

Many Kudo’s to Debra Patzer and Quaker. This was Quaker’s first dressage show, and he did very well for Debra. He warmed up in traffic and marched through his tests like a seasoned campaigner.

Elizabeth Granger Elizabeth Granger riding her quarter horse Guinness rode three very rhythmic first level tests and place in each of them and improving every ride. Liz's goal this show year is to develop an up hill longitudinal balance on Guinness and improve his trot lengthening.

Elizabeth Granger and Guinnes moved up to First level this year and are now quite the competitive pair. As Guinnes consistently keeps an elastically round top line in his work as seen in these pictures his scores will come way up.

Sue Simpson

Sue Simpson also showed First level. She rode her 19-year-old Trakaner gelding ‘Sub Coooled’, better known as Tar baby. Sue has worked hard suppling Tar Baby, he is very stiff through out his top line, which impedes his ability to carry Sue through his back. But with physical therapies like dressage and massage she is making steady progress at turning Tar Baby into a competitive dressage horse.

Sue Simpson improved Tar Baby’s scores dramatically from his first test to the second one. She is not afraid to make demands on his mind and body to stay round working off his hind end. Tar Baby has a very good conformation and as he supples with training First level will become easy for him.

Rachael Ciesiolka

Rachael Ciesiolka showed her Morgan gelding ‘Indy’ at First level. Indy at 18 has become a lovely dressage horse. He has developed exceptional balance now and carries himself beautifully in his working and extended gaits. Now if Rachael can remember her test and recognize her canter leads she will see that 70% score she desires this year.
